Saving the Oceans

I'm following on from Anni with her cute gift packaging yesterday with some gift packaging of my own ready for Christmas.  There is lots of talk at the moment about how lots of the wrapping paper we buy cannot be recycled as it has plastic on it so in this era of cutting down on unnecessary plastic to stop it all ending up in the oceans, the environmental alternative is to use brown paper and decorate yourself which is something I have always been a fan of.

I have some gift boxes made of brown card which are just crying out to be stamped on or decorated with die cuts (you can find gift boxes easily on Amazon or I really like the Tiny Box Company too).  For my project today I just used the gorgeous new Perfect Poinsettia Die from MFT and the big bold statement sentiment from Concord and 9th that is Merry and Bright.

I just cut the sentiment from red card and glued it on the front of the box and decorated it with the holly that is included with it using the same red but adding glossy accents to make the berries stand out.

To make the poinsettia I die cut "flowers" in the same red, and "leaves" in two shades of green - the die adds lovely veined details and I emphasised those by simple rubbing on some metallic waxes (gold, green, red and copper).  I die cut the middles from black glitter card from the Autumn Sparkle pack from Lawn Fawn.  Then it's a simple case of layering them all up.  You could just stick them flat to you box but I wanted it more 3D so I used some florist berries pips - easy to find online or in hobby craft - mine were red but I wanted gold so I rolled them around on my versamark pad and dipped them in gold embossing powder and carefully heated them (they are plastic so if you over do it they will bubble and the red will show through)  They do come in lots of colours though if you want to skip this step!  I added some dabs of gold glitter on top too.   If you wanted to go totally plastic free then you'd need to skip the stamens and any glitter as that is essentially plastic too but I think these boxes could be reused - they'd make good Christmas storage boxes or could be used by the recipient to pass on a gift next year, so I'm OK with the amount of plastic I've used.

I used a bradawl to poke a hole through the centre of my flower and pushed 5 berries through on their wires - you can then just make a hole in the top of the box, poke the wires through and then bend them so they are flat under the lid to hold it in place (you can use a circle of card to glue over that to make it all look tidy.

Easy and simple to make, but impressive looking packaging that won't end up in the sea.  Job done!

NEWS FROM THE STORE

It's going to be a busy week again!

Firstly - we are having a rare day off on Thursday so no orders will ship that day.  You can order as normal - the store will not close  - but will be not be working so will not be answering emails or Facebook messages either.  We will return to normal on Friday and get caught up as quickly as we can.

If you missed our announcement yesterday - our Oxides Set 5's arrived along with restocks on all the others as well as lots of other Ranger products - including their new letter-it foam tapes in white, black and clear!

We have the following shipments in transit and expected in store this week:
  • Lawn Fawn restocks
  • Alcohol inks, more oxides and their reinkers and a few other new to us Tim Holtz items from Ranger and Stampers Anonymous
  • The latest release from Lil' Inker Designs
  • The new release from Waffle Flower which goes live in the USA on the 5th November - we haven't got it yet so unless it arrives early tomorrow it won't be live on release day.
  • The new release from Avery Elle goes live in the USA on the 8th November - again it all depends on when it arrives as to whether or not it is live on release day but we will be out of the office on the 8th so nothing will ship on that day.
MFT November release is late this month and will be on the 15th.   It will return to normal in December but there will also be a mid month release where we can get the kit stamps and dies (but not the actual kits) on the same day as the kits are released in the USA.

Concord and 9th will have a new release on the 9th (the clue is in their name!) however they never ship to us in advance so it will be sometime the week after before we have it in store, and we do not do pre-orders - we only ever sell what we have physically available to ship at the time of order.

Mama Elephant have another fabulous release which we have available on the 15th November.

Catch you on Friday

Tara
